Local Church Information
As part of the Diocese of York we are proud of our really strong links with the local churches including All Saints' and the Methodist Chapel. Our school is supported by Reverend Sally Gough who supports the churches in the benefice; Thornton Dale, Allerston, Ebberston, Ellerburn and Wilton where some of our children live. Reverend Sally visits school regularly, leading whole-school worship and services. 'Open the Book' assemblies take place weekly, on a Tuesday delivered by members of All Saints' Church and the Methodist Chapel. Some of our church members come in to school on a regular basis to listen to children reading.
All Saints' Church is a Grade 2 listed building, standing prominently on a hill, immediately alongside the A170 Pickering to Scarborough road, and overlooking the picturesque village of Thornton Dale.
The present building, largely 14th century, is unusual in that, apart from the chancel, the main body of the Church is completely of that period known as the 'decorated' style of architecture. The chancel was completely rebuilt in 1865/6.
Every school year we are involved with church visits as part of our RE curriculum. Special visits are made by the whole school to both local churches at Harvest Festival, Christmas and Easter and the end of the school year.
Open The Book - this group visits the school on a regular basis to provide wonderful school assemblies telling stories from the Bible in an exciting way.
The Methodist Chapel is situated in the centre of Thornton Dale near to the green, on Maltongate. The Chapel was built in 1909 and has seating for 180 people, there is also an adjoining hall at the rear of the Chapel.
